Here’s why I’m doing this event.

Seven years ago I was changing the world. I had two small kids who woke at 5am every morning, I had just started working again, decided I was going to write a play to change the culture of birth (and I did), then decided I was going to start a global movement to use the play as a theatre for social change piece (done!), and in between I moved my family eight times in five years.

I had so many excuses to be exhausted and not get enough sleep I used to joke, “I’ll get sleep when the kids go to college.”

Then a health crisis “brick” fell on my head. Anxiety. Panic Attacks. Was I dying?

Thank goodness for wake up calls. When mine came my life felt like it was falling apart, but deep down when I was honest with myself I had a sense that all my doing was going to drive me into the ground.

Enter the best life-changing nap of my life. I already had a taste of this nap. It had helped me write my play so I knew its power.
But the first time I did it I was spiritually lost, groping outward for more, more, more…I didn’t get one BIG piece of wisdom.

That in order to serve others I’ve got to serve myself.

What do I mean by a Nap?

By nap I mean any form of rest that wakes up the body. It could be the get in your bed and gotta sleep kind, but it could also be the meditative kind of sleep that packs a wildly powerful punch.

To be honest, I don’t need science to convince me that sleep makes sense. So while Dr. Sara’s book rocked the science of taking a nap, my take away is summed up in this statement by her:

“While death from lack of sleep is possible, it’s the cumulative health effects of chronic sleep deprivation that should set off alarms.”

Like what? Cancer, hormone imbalances, depression…

Oh wait, she had me at cancer. Sleep is THAT important.

Life’s a journey. When you’re fully awake
that’s when you’re on the journey.

Our culture is demanding that every person on our planet WAKE UP and start claiming their power – to pay attention to their body, their authentic voice, and make choices from that place of power. Imagine if every world leader took naps and got better sleep? I guarantee you decisions on healthcare and whether we go to war or not would create a better world.

This is exactly why I created an online event that would address the topic of better sleep from all different angles.

I picked each speaker because they are all passionate about the power of sleep. From Arianna Huffington who knows that sleep can revolutionize women’s health and leadership to Dr. Rubin Naiman whose wisdom on how insomniacs can embrace the night without running to medicate themselves is helping people live healthier lives and be happier world contributors.

Robin CarnesRobin Carnes Co-Founder Warriors at Ease & The Military Mind Body Health Consortium.
